                     Urban Agriculture

Urban Agriculture in Cobb County has two primary areas of concern: Home Horticulture and the Green Industry. While seemingly two different entities there is a surprising similarity.

The Horticulture staff has broad and varied training and experience. The Horticulture staff consists of one horticulture extension agent, Steve Brady and four  horticulture program assistants plus a dynamic and growing group of certified Master Gardeners.

The staff fields a broad range of questions over the phone and from walk in clients. The topics range from weeds, bugs, plant diseases to cultural requirements. It is important to identify the problem properly before any recommendations can be made to correct the situation. Using the wrong treatment often causes even bigger problems. Often bugs don't need to be controlled because there are many good bugs doing natural control that will also be killed when trying to control a possible problem bug. Many problems are difficult to identify over the phone so we request a sample be brought in to the office. If we are unable to identify the problem, weed, bug or whatever, the specimen can be sent off to the Extension Specialists at UGA for identification. Client soil samples are sent to the lab for testing. The results of the test are returned with the recommendation specific to the crop, turf type, tree, perennials or annuals needs. Free seminars are provided to the public relative to current growing times or conditions. Many questions may be answered by the hundreds of pamphlets on hand. Just call or drop by the office and request one on the horticulture.
