Cobb County Master Gardener Program

Do you find a quiet morning stroll in your garden is a wonderful way to start the day?  Do you find yourself ‘talking’ about plants with your friends?  If you have the time and like doing volunteer work, you might enjoy being a Master Gardener volunteer in the Cobb County Extension Service Horticulture Department.

Master Gardeners are well trained educational volunteers, who provide an  invaluable service to the community as well as to the Extension Service.  The training, which is based on The University of Georgia research, is geared toward the questions routinely asked by the homeowners who call the Extension Service for advice.

After completion of the 11-week horticulture training, the volunteers are required to commit 50 hours to the Extension Service.  In Cobb, 30 of the 50 hours are devoted to the public’s horticulture questions on the Horticulture Hot Line.  The other 20 hours are devoted to Master Gardener projects in Cobb.

The 2006 Master Gardener course, which costs $115.00, is from January 8 through March 26th.  The training will be at the DeKalb County Extension Service; 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur.

The Cobb application deadline is at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29th.  Cobb residents should call  the Cobb Master Gardener Coordinator, at 770 528-4070 for information about the program and to request an application.
