Soil tests such as those conducted by the University of Georgia Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory will help you develop and maintain a more productive soil by providing information about the fertility status of your soil.
Information from a soil test will help you select the proper liming and fertilization program to obtain optimal growth of lawn, garden and ornamental plants.
One of the most important steps in soil testing is collecting the sample. Soil test results can be no better than the sample submitted to the laboratory for analysis.
A soil sample weighing about 1 pound is used to represent thousands of pounds of soil in the landscape or garden. Therefore, it is extremely important that soil samples be taken properly. Click here to access the link for our Soil Testing instructions.
Please feel free to contact our office to have the soil testing bags and instructions for collecting samples mailed to you. You may also bring the soil in to our Cobb County Extension office in a baggie or any clean container. If you choose to mail your sample, please send it to:

The cost is $6.00 per soil test bag for the routine soil test. Payment for the soil test must be made by check or money order. WE CANNOT ACCEPT CASH. Make the check payable to Cobb 4-h club
Guidelines for submitting soil samples:
· Testing requires at least 16 ounces of soil. This is equal to 2 cups or one pint of soil.
· We cannot accept wet or damp soil. If soil is wet or damp, lay it out on newspaper until it is completely dried.
· If you do not have the required soil sample bags, submit your soil sample in a dry container.
· You may list up to 5 items on the bag in the section labeled “crop”
· We can only accept checks and money orders as payment for soil samples
Within seven to ten days after submitting your sample, you will receive a Soil Test Report indicating the results of the soil test and recommendations for liming and fertilization.
